There's a whole lot we can do for you at
The Crash Factory - this list of what we offer should help you decide if recording with us is for you. You probably have some questions that aren't answered here. Heck, everyone needs something different.
Email or phone us up with your ideas - we're more than happy to chat about how we can go about things. You can also stop by and see the studio to get more of a feel for the place and to meet our fabulous engineers - they're pretty darned good at what they do. Let us know when you'd like to visit and we'll make sure someone is about.
Here at
The Crash Factory we hate watching the clock. Hate it. We just have a flat daily rate so you don't have to worry about time - it just isn't conducive to making good records. A day here is as long as it needs to be and there is usually an obvious point to tie up the session. Anything less than a day is charged at our hourly rate, much better if you just want to come in with an acoustic guitar for an evening.
As a rule of thumb a day is usually long enough to get two songs sounding great. Of course you could bang out twelve in an afternoon or spend three days on one epic - it is your session after all, but two songs is usually comfortable in a day.
We've been using the word
Day quite flippantly, but your session needn't be in the daytime at all. Any time of the day or night is pretty great for recording, so let us know the times you want your session to start when you book.
Just as important as the actual recording, mixing is an integral part of a session. It's usually a good idea to spend around as much time mixing as you have done tracking, depending on what kind of sound you're after. Heavily-effected Pink Floyd opuses tend to take longer to mix than lo-fi garage punk records (but not always!). At
The Crash Factory we'll mix anything, recorded here or not. If you've recorded something at home or at another studio and it hasn't quite got that sound then drop it over to us and let us know how you want it. One of the things great big analogue consoles really shine on is mixing; none of this harsh, digital tripe - just great sound.
Mastering is the final stage in making a record and will make all the difference between great records and pansy wannabe demos. We offer second to none Mastering at unusually affordable prices, and have pro facilities and engineers in-house. Subtly liven up and smooth out your tracks or pump the hell out of them until they're louder than anyone else! We'll do it.
You've been playing a while. You've probably got some recording gear at home and you want to try your hand at laying down your own tracks, but there are problems: your neighbours don't really like your drummer, you're having trouble getting the bass to sound like it's not made of cardboard, or your vocals sound like they've been recorded in, well, your front room. Come to us and use our top drum mics, vocal booth or whatever you like. We can give you just the raw audio files in any form you want so you can get home and start 'being creative' with duvets and mic stands in cupboards.
We do loads here! Our bread and butter is recording people, but more goes on besides:
- CD/DVD Duplication: Short runs for not many pennies.
- CD/DVD Repair: Skipping CD? Drop it to us and we'll make it playable again.
- Audio Restoration: Anything from removing hiss from old tapes and bad recordings to cleaning up blurry speech recordings, or fixing glitches on a variety of media.
- Composition: Our engineers also seem to be musicians! Talented ones at that, trained in contemporary composition and seeming to know what sounds good and what really doesn't. If you need music for any purpose; soundscapes for art installations, incidental music or foley for film, or just help with some songs you're stuck with, give us a call.
Short courses for sound engineers
We will soon be running a series of weekly lessons on the basics and not-so-basics of sound engineering and studio know-how. A lesson every week with guaranteed practical time and a portfolio of recordings as a result. Taught in very small groups of two or three people by experienced Music Technology teachers, this will be an ideal course if you're thinking about taking Music Technology at university or college and want a primer of the subject (as well as giving you some work to show at an interview), or if you want to build on your past experience of recording to get your band on tape or a job in a studio.
